The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.
This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a possible escape.
Court Filing Details Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.
His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I invite you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's ruling was the potential of the former president's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a record of arranging to ask for protection through a embassy office", a declaration said.
The court filing highlights that the United States embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 8 miles from the former president's residence.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative United States President President Trump, prompting him to enact a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.
He is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will undergo a detention review on Sunday.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other health problems.
Context of Sentencing
He was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.
High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.
The plot was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the national capital, the capital city.
The police intervened and around 1,500 people were arrested.
The magistrates found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the period, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also barred from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 national vote.
