EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal news:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to cut security grants to local governments which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the case was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
