The Trump movement's most revealing and characteristic moments – not its most significant, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of a few weeks, the American president commenced revealing the public his plans for an ornate dance hall twice the size compared to the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to build it.
He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of casualties from his cuts to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and presently an analysis forecast his energy policies would kill 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have risked – truly, no other president would have imagined – independently wrecking major areas of the presidential residence in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of numerous America's wealthiest, nearly all of which conduct transactions with federal agencies.
We went from 'the meek shall inherit the planet' toward 'the meek shall die of cholera'
As disorienting as it is to watch the president try to upend the old idea about democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we learned about into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they transformed an image of love into an icon of animosity who approves specifically the brutality that he criticized in scripture; this change developed more slowly, across decades instead of months, yet it remains unsettling in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground
Therefore allow me to outline the Jesus from my upbringing, since in theory the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and since the fastest-growing cadre of Americans could have minimal awareness about him because they identify as non-believers or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with different religions; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of substantial value in biblical accounts.
It is emphatically not the account of an authoritative monarch appearing; conversely, a baby is born to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to escape secret police. The infant develops in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his doctrine focuses on affection for others, specifically for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but tangible care, shown by providing food and housing. Jesus' answer to aggression is to offer the opposite cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a method to teach the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever someone steals your coat you must offer them your pullover also.
The apparent and straightforward fact that the Savior of the gospels requests a kind of radical love concentrated on the needy has perpetually caused Christianity something of a scandalous religion: attractive to the masses, but owing to its natural unconventionality demanding to be controlled. During the 1950s it was contained by dilution – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it practically sanctified existing conditions.
A Struggle for the Best Among Us
Hence I have become inspired to witness the persistent defiance against Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has been great solace to participate in developing the campaign that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated citizens to turn out in large quantities in interim political contests. We shall require to persist with it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags during all protests and requests to the highest qualities in US history.
We're going to be asked ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you receive him and embrace them or refuse?
The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, by relationship to the highest within national tradition, just as Christianity is most protected through connection to that which renders it unique and magnificent, particularly the pattern of Jesus. In all circumstances does it imply feigning the most negative regarding America and Christianity did not happen; it signifies both modesty and belief, a mixture that genuine American Christians should be comfortable with.
